North Carolina Marriage Amendment

North Carolina Senators Forrester, Smith, Allran, Apodaca, Berger of Rockingham, Bingham, Brock, Brown, Brunstetter, East, Goodall, Hartsell, Hunt, Jacumin, Pittenger, Preston, Snow, and Tillman submitted the marriage amendment bill, Bill S13, on January 24, 2007. It opens by saying, “Marriage is the union of one man and one woman at one time. This is the only marriage that shall be recognized as valid in this State. The uniting of two persons of the same sex or the uniting of more than two persons of any sex in a marriage, civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar relationship within or outside of this State shall not be valid or recognized in this State.”

On February 12, 2007, President Pro Tem Marc Basnight referred the bill to a committe that hasn’t met in five and a half years, the Ways and Means Committee. This is a silent filibuster to keep the people of North Carolina from voting on one of the most fundamental issues of creation and society. We cannot sit around and simply watch this kind of legislative arrogance.

Defining marriage correctly is in the range of the biggest issues in the world, right alongside abortion-murder, justice, and freedom. For those of us who live in the world, this is a big deal. For those of us who live in America, this is a bigger deal. And for those of us who live in North Carolina, this is one of the biggest political-cultural deals out there right now. If you care about marriage as it is defined by God, get involved. Here are some links:

Return America.Org – “We need your help in building a network of churches and individuals to educate, motivate and mobilize citizens in a united effort in promoting Judeo-Christian values; to educate and influence government in these principles upon which our state and nation were founded.” This organization is based in North Carolina, and they just held a huge rally in the legislature’s backyard this past week.

Please don’t skip on past this. This is more important than the next thing on your to-do list. It is more important than the next task at work. Our society will become pure darkness if we don’t fight to shine God’s light of truth all over it.

  1. Teresa says:

And if man continually takes away the option to choose you will do nothing more but turn more and more people from even learning of God’s infinite and powerful love. Forcing people to abide by rules and guidelines they do not come to believe in of their own accord is not creating more biblical followers of Christ but prisoners of Christianity. Allowing same-sex marriage does not force heterosexuals into marrying someone of the same sex, but ensures that all people have the right to choose.

We have to CHOOSE to come to God from our hearts and not at the hands of another. Don’t forget freewill it is the most important gift God could ever bestow upon us.

    Teresa,

Thanks for dropping by to comment. I appreciate your honesty and candor.

As for the content of your comment, you cover a lot of ground. By the grace of God, I will try to respond as quickly and Biblically as I can.

First of all, if I can sum up the gist of your first statement, you say that laws defining marriage as one man united to one woman would be “creating . . . prisoners of Christianity.” Here, according to the Bible, you misunderstand both the role of government under God and the aim of such laws. The role of government under God as defined in places like Romans 13 is to be “the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.” So government’s role is to restrict, restrain, and punish for evil, not to produce followers of one religion or another (that is the church’s job). Passages like Romans 13 and others help bear this out.

It would follow, then, that homosexuality must be evil in order for a government to restrict, restrain, and punish for it. In this area, you said that the “God’s infinite and powerful love” should compel us to let whoever love whomever however they may want. But that is surely not what the Bible teaches. A man may say that he loves the woman he is raping, but the Bible tells us that he is lying. A wife might say that she murdered her husband because she loved him so much, but, again, the Scriptures would prove her false.

Accordingly, the Bible also tells us not to be deceived in this area, because “neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God,” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). In the category of un-Christian evil practices, God places homosexuality right alongside fornication, idolatry, adultery, burglary, greediness, habitual drunkenness, reviling, and con-artistry. He emphatically says, “These people cannot enter My kingdom.” So doing them cannot be called “loving” in any way that God defines love – true love, that is – any more than stealing from someone or committing adultery against your wife can be called love.

But there is hope for the seemingly hopeless. Paul finishes this thought by saying, “Such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” What an incredible statement of the gracious power of God! Such were some of you, but God has saved you by Christ’s name and the Spirit’s power! Hallelujah! That’s the Good News!

So the government’s job is not to make disciples of Jesus, but to restrain, restrict, and punish all kinds of evil all over its given domain. This is precisely why we have all kinds of laws against murder, arson, burglary, robbery, assualt, rape, incest, speeding, drunk driving, trespassing, and a host of others. More precise laws against homosexual marriage would simply do the same (as their less precise predecessors always have). Homosexuality is an evil that cannot be tolerated by an society, or it will, sooner or later, be terminated (see Genesis 19 and the story of every other society that promoted such abominations before God).

I am sorry that you don’t see it this way. Your un-Biblical, untrue, deceptive understanding of “love” as you define it is blinding you from the truth of God’s holy Word. God has spoken! Don’t falsify what He says is true! Don’t add to or take away from what He has already said!

Following Jesus, dear Teresa, does not mean doing whatever you want after having some conversion experience. It means following Him in whatever ways and places He deems right because you believe that He is better than life and wiser than all human wisdom combined.

Please run to Him and find your true Treasure. Forsake all false ways to which you cling. Ask Him, “Open my eyes, Lord; don’t leave me to myself.” Then go read the Bible where He speaks perfectly. Your free will cannot save you. It can do no good at all until He works inside your heart to make it free to love Him truly.
