The Love of Discipline

And by this I mean, the way discipline is love.  I’m speaking of the way it functions properly as love.

Here at my middle school, our students rarely (maybe never) think of our discipline and correction as love.  But it is.  It keeps them from error, disobedience, and ultimately death – even if only for a season.

God says as much in Proverbs 3:11-12,

My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights.

and Proverbs 13:24

Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.

This is the way God treats His children – He lovingly disciplines us that we may share in His holiness.  His correction is the very evidence of His love toward us.  How loving He is to turn us back from the evil, prideful, death-bringing way!  How gracious is His rod of correction!

So parents, practice the regular correction and discipline of your children. Do so because it is love.  Take counsel from the Word of the Lord to love your children as He does, and do not purpose to put them to death.
