Gospel = God

It’s a simple equation, demanded by the following verse:

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel. . .

So, in Galatians 1:6, Paul says that the Galatians have deserted God for a different gospel. He doesn’t say they desert one gospel for another gospel (though that is true); he says that they desert the one true God by deserting His gospel.

This is a convicting point for those of us who think we can know God apart from His gospel.

  1. Arthur Talley says:

    What Paul was saying to the Galatian churches was that Judaizers have introduced a works salvation into the Christian Church and these new belivers were carried away with these errors. Acts 15 will help anyone to understand that the Gospel of Christ is of faith, not of works. Works is the deeds of the traditional law. Paul said, in Gal. 5, that the Judaizers had put a yoke on the Christians and that they had strayed off course.

    Yes, I completely agree that faith instead of works was the context of Paul’s statement, but what I posted about was the astounding fact that he equates knowing God and being called by Him with believing the Gospel. That is an astounding fact indeed.
