J.D. Greear – Revitalizing a Church Around the Gospel

I had the privilege and joy of being able to go to Advance ’09 this morning and hear Ed Stetzer, J.D. Greear, and Eric Mason preach.  Greear’s message was especially convicting, since the title didn’t do it the heart-piercing justice it needs.  It should have been titled, “Jesus Says You Are a Pharisee.”  Here are J.D.’s six points from Matthew 23:

  1. Religious people love the recognition of others (v.5-7).
  2. Religious people substitute ritual for a love for God (v.27-28).
  3. Religious people elevate secondary issues over a love for God (v.16-22).
  4. Religious people elevate religious tradition over a love for others (v.23).
  5. Religious people notice the sin of others more than their own (v.2-3).
  6. Religious people think that we are always talking about someone else (all over the Bible).

I was especially convicted that my passion for secondary issues can often hinder and overshadow my passion for, as my friend Kenny says, “the living Christ.” Great way to put it. He is alive. Why seek the Living One among the dead?
