Deception as Disaster

There is one more thing to point out about 2 Chronicles 18:22.  Let us read:

Now therefore, behold, the LORD has put a deceiving spirit in the mouth of these your prophets, for the LORD has proclaimed disaster against you.

In the last post, we saw the theological underpinnings of such a statement. In this post, we want to apply this verse to our current state of modern evangelicalism, and the application will open rather clearly.

What are we to make of the many deceivers who have gone out into the church, preaching many false gospels? What are we to say about the health, wealth, and prosperity movement? What about the self-help “gospel”? What about the “gospel” of universal salvation? What about the liberal “gospel” of social justice and no absolute truth?

Can they be construed as anything other than the judging, disastrous hand of God upon us? Since God is ultimately sovereign, can there be any other theological explanation for this?

Oh, may we repent of desiring self-help, universalism, money, and man’s approval more than the true Word of the Living God! May He relent and leave a blessing instead! Oh, turn, my brothers and sisters, let us turn together.
