Finding the Right Girl, Part I: She Can’t Make You Happy

Today, we start a three-part series on “Finding the Right Girl.” My aim is to help my single readers learn from good theology, practical wisdom, and a heaping helping of my own mistakes that searching for an excellent wife need not be such a head-banging, heart-clanging, hurt-X process.

On tap for Part I: She Can’t Make You Happy.

And by this, I mean that even the creme de la creme of wives cannot make you ultimately happy.  The friendship might be tighter than a vise, the laughs might make your sides hurt, and the sparkle in your eyes may indeed feel like magic – but, at the end of the day, you need more.  Because you need God.

God alone can fulfill your Mariana Trench of desires because:

  1. God made the trench. He created your heart with deep, seemingly insatiable desires for joy. He made it so that He would be the beautiful joy-filler.
  2. God alone is enough to fill the trench. Not only is the Maker, He is the Water as well (get it?). Since He made us for Himself, it is clear that only He can fill us up.  As Jeremiah 2:13 says, “Be appalled, O Heavens, at this, that My people have committed two great evils: they forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and have made for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
  3. No man, woman, or child can reach that deep. Not even with a magical, happy submarine can someone reach bottom to top and fill you up. Only God can.  Your desires are too deep, and everyone else is too small.

See, your first problem with “finding the right girl” is that you’re probably looking for a bucket to fill your Grand Canyon.  You think that if she’s “The One” then everything will be fine.  But that puts too much emphasis on her, and not enough on God.  And the first thing you need to know is this: she won’t be God.
