I Hate Bible Cliches

Psalm 80 reminds me of something – I hate Bible cliches. I hate it when people repeat the same trite phrases with no meaning. I hate (faux) theology with no exegesis. And I mean that word, “hate.”

I hate Bible cliches because they deaden my ears (and yours) to the Word of God. They make us think that we can reduce the Bible to 3 or 4 phrases about God’s love, forgiveness, and acceptance of everyone – when the Bible is infinitely irreducible! It is a billion times greater than our evangelical cliches!

So, next time you and I want to reduce God to verses we memorized in 2nd grade, let’s go study His Word instead. We’ll find there that the Living God is more beautiful, more angry at sin, more gracious toward His people, more sovereign, more happy, and more complex than we ever imagined.
