The Son Restores Our Afflictions: Psalm 80

After recounting God’s judgment of Israel and begging Him for restoration, the psalmist ends Psalm 80 with these lines:

But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
Then we shall not turn back from you;
give us life, and we will call upon your name!
Restore us, O LORD God of hosts!
Let your face shine, that we may be saved!

In other words, the writer points to the man of God’s right hand, the son of man, as the hope for final, heart-level restoration. When this man comes, then our hearts will finally be alive to God, not turning away but calling on His name. This is the evidence that He has shone His face upon us.

Oh Christian, do you know affliction? Has God brought a hard bruising into your life, and you know not how to hold on? Take heart, dear Christian, there is a man at His right hand, Jesus Christ His Son, whom He has made strong for you in this hour.

When God sends this man for you, you will not turn back, even in affliction. You will instead have God’s living Spirit in you to call on His name. Then you will know your restoration!
