God is the Good Indoctrinator

“Doctrine” and “indoctrination” have a bad reputation. They get used in sentences about totalitarian regimes, subversive activities, legalistic churches, and childhood grievances. But the word “doctrine” – like it or not – is also biblical.

“Doctrine/teaching” (noun) – a sampling from the Bible

  • Deuteronomy 32:2:  May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill
as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers
    upon the herb.
  • Job 36:22:  Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him?
  • Psalm 78:1: Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
  • Romans 6:17  But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
  • 1 Timothy 4:6: If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.
  • 1 Timothy 6:3: If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness . .
  • Titus 1:9: He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
  • Titus 2:1: But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.
  • Titus 2:10: [Slaves are to be ….] not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
  • 2 John 9  Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

“Teach” (verb, from same root) – a sampling from the Bible

  • Exodus 4:12:  Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.
  • Deuteronomy 33:10: They shall teach Jacob your rules and Israel your law; they shall put incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar.
  • 1Kings 8:36:  then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk
  • Ezar 7:10:  For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.
  • Psalm 25:5:  Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
  • Psalm 32:8:  I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
  • Psalm 119:33:  Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.
  • Proverbs 9:9:  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
  • Isaiah 48:17  Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.”
  • Matthew 5:2: And Jesus opened His mouth and taught them, saying [the Sermon on the Mount].
  • Mark 1:21:  And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
  • Mark 8:31:  And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
  • John 14:26:  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
  • Acts 5:42:  And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
  • 1 Corinthians 4:17:  That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.
  • Colossians 1:28: Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
  • 1 Timothy 3:2: Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach
  • Titus 2:3: Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good…

Wow. That’s a huge list, from across every major book and section of Scripture. God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – apparently cares a whole lot about teaching, and the right kind of teaching. This is often called “sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1) or “the teaching of Christ” (2 John 9).

God Loves Christ-centered Doctrine
God cares so much about sound, Christ-centered doctrine because God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – is the One who does the teaching. Every member of the Trinity teaches! God is the Good Teacher, the Good Indoctrinator!

Sometimes folks try to remove God from Scripture and teaching, but they literally couldn’t be further from the truth. God is communicated in Scripture and teaching that accords faithfully to it:

  • Colossians 1:28 says that Paul communicated Christ to people by “teaching and preaching.”
  • According to 2 Peter 1:2-4, it is by believing these “great and very precious promises” that we participate in the divine nature.
  • 2 John 9 says that if we go beyond the teaching of Christ, we don’t have Him or His Father. This means true doctrine is of first importance.

Knowing God is truly knit and tied to Scripture, because He has self-sworn Himself to uphold His Word. It is not incidental or meaningless. It is from God’s mighty lungs.
